Fishing Around Morgantown, WV - Heritage Realty International Inc.

Late spring and early summer provide some of the best fishing of the year in the Morgantown, WV, area. Our local lakes, rivers and streams offer opportunities to catch a wide range of fish species, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, trout, catfish, and panfish.

So grab your rod and get ready to catch your limit! Our real estate agents are excited to share some of their favorite fishing holes in and around Morgantown.

• Cobun Creek Reservoir - Mississippi Street, Morgantown, WV 26501
A small, secluded lake within the wooded landscape of White Park, Cobun Creek Reservoir was built in 1958 as a water supply impoundment along Cobun Creek. The reservoir is home to largemouth bass, sunfish, and channel catfish. It's one of the best fishing spots within the city limits, and bank access is available along the reservoir's earthen dam. Cobun Creek Reservoir is just minutes from these Morgantown homes for sale and is most easily accessed via a short hiking trail from the White Park parking area on Mississippi Street.

• Cheat Lake - Morgans Run Road, Morgantown, WV 26508
Just 15 minutes from downtown Morgantown, 1,700-acre Cheat Lakes is the largest lake in Monongalia County. Its 26-mile shoreline offers ample opportunities for anglers. The lake has been stocked with largemouth bass and walleye and also offers opportunities to catch channel catfish, yellow perch, and northern pike. Some of the best lake access is at Cheat Lake Park, which offers fishing docks, boat launch facilities, and a 4.5-mile trail that follows the shoreline and offers ample opportunities to cast from the bank.

• Monongahela River - Don Knotts Boulevard, Morgantown, WV 26501
The mighty Monongahela River flows right through the heart of Morgantown. The river offers excellent fishing for a variety of fish but is best known for smallmouth bass and channel catfish. There's an abundance of access thanks to the Caperton Trail, a 6-mile paved trail that follows the river through Morgantown and connects to several riverside parks and downtown's vibrant shopping and dining district. Waters above and below each of the locks on the river offer some of the best fishing. During the colder months, try the warm water discharges at the Rivesville and Morgantown power plants.

• Coopers Rock Lake - Bruceton Mills, WV 26525
Located just off I-68 within Coopers Rock State Forest, Coopers Rock Lake is a tiny lake that spans just 3 acres, but offers some big fishing opportunities. The best time to fish here is March through May, when Coopers Rock Lake is stocked every two weeks with catchable rainbow trout. A few trout may remain in summer, but anglers during the warmer months are more likely to catch largemouth bass and bluegill.

• Mason & Dixon Lakes - Mason Dixon Highway, Maidsville, WV 26541
Situated just 2 miles apart, Mason Lake and Dixon Lake each offer some unique fishing opportunities less than 20 minutes away from Morgantown. Both lakes support ample populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish, while Mason Lake is also stocked with trout from February through May. Muskellunge have been caught in Mason Lake as well. Mason and Dixon Lakes are both located within Pedlar Wildlife Management Area and are popular for kayaking as well as fishing.
