Mountaineer Country - Things to Do - Heritage Real Estate Co.

As Belinda Carlisle sang, heaven is a place on earth, and it's right here in Mountaineer Country. Our real estate agents never tire of visiting these fascinating places in Mountaineer Country as recommended by West Virginia Tourism

  • Seneca Center - 709 Beechurst Ave., Morgantown, WV 26505
Tired of shopping in generic malls and strip centers? Get your shopping fix with a side of local history at Seneca Center, not far from Morgantown homes for sale. A distinctive red water tower greets you on your approach. The building, with its 100-foot glass furnace chimney, dates back to 1898 when Mountaineer Country was home to a thriving glass manufacturing business. Today, the brick-lined walls and wooden floors hold a number of charming boutiques and small businesses. Hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

  • Gillum House Bed & Breakfast - 35 Walnut St., Shinnston, WV 26431
If you're touring Shinnston homes for sale or just want a relaxing staycation, plan a night or two at Gillum House Bed & Breakfast. The house is named for Troy and Anna Brane Gillum, a prominent local couple who purchased it in 1918. Rooms feature a mix of classic and modern amenities, including clawfoot bathtubs, handmade quilts, and flat-screen TVs. Gillum House makes a great home base for exploring covered bridges, state parks, wineries, and other nearby attractions. Visit the website to make reservations.

  • Philippi Covered Bridge & Historic District - 200 N. Main St., Philippi, WV 26416
Mountaineer Country roads are graced with several covered bridges. At 285 feet, the Philippi Covered Bridge is the longest one in the state. Philippi was the site of the first land battle during the Civil War, and the bridge was heavily traveled by armies on both sides. The city's historic district, right down the street from Philippi homes for sale, is home to stately buildings in a wide range of architectural styles. Barbour County Courthouse, Philippi B&O Railroad Station, and the District itself are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Art Museum of WVU - 20 Fine Arts Dr., Morgantown, WV 26506
Having a quality institute of higher learning like West Virginia University provides world-class cultural opportunities, such as the Art Museum of WVU. More than 4,000 paintings, photos, sculptures, ceramics, and drawings make up the museum's permanent collection, which focuses on the 20th and 21st centuries. The McGee Gallery adds perspective to the collection with rotating displays that highlight museum pieces in a specific thematic context. Don't miss the Nath Sculpture Garden, which surrounds the museum with a blend of sculptures, plants, and trees. Museum hours are 12:30 - 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and admission is free.

  • Prickett's Fort State Park - 88 State Park Rd., Fairmont, WV 26554
Travel back to colonial times just minutes from Fairmont homes for sale at Prickett's Fort State Park, which commemorates life on the Virginia frontier. The reconstructed fort hosts demonstrations of weaving, butter churning, and other 18th-century activities, conducted by guides in period attire. Available outdoor activities include hiking, biking, picnicking, boating, and fishing. Prickett's Fort is open mid-April through October and admission is $8 for adults and $4 for ages 6-12. The park itself is open year-round, free of charge.
