- Simpson Creek Covered Bridge - Bridgeport-Meadowbrook Rd., Bridgeport, WV 26330
Covered bridges are one of the most cherished and iconic parts of Americana. Bridgeport is fortunate to have its own relic of the past with Simpson Creek Covered Bridge. Civil War veteran Asa Hugill built the 14.25-foot wide, 75-foot long bridge in 1881 for the then-princely sum of $1,483. After a flood washed out the bridge at its original site, it was moved about a half-mile south to its current location near Meadowbrook Mall. In 2001, Simpson Creek Covered Bridge underwent nearly $400,000 of renovations, including a new timber deck, exterior siding, and a fresh coat of paint.
- Bridgeport Bark Park - Brushy Fork Rd., Bridgeport, WV 26330
Fido is just as anxious to get outdoors as you are. Head out to Bridgeport Bark Park, the first off-leash facility in the area. Built by volunteers and funded by donations, the park has a double-gate system that allows people and pets to enter while keeping the other dogs safely inside the fence. Share a vigorous game of fetch or let your pet spend some quality time making friends with the other dogs. Trash cans and doggie waste bags are available, while plans are in the works to add water fountains. Park hours are 7 a.m. - dusk daily.
- Valley Falls State Park - 720 Valley Falls Rd., Fairmont, WV 26554
At one time, the area around Fairmont homes for sale, less than 30 minutes from Bridgeport, was a thriving lumber and grist mill community. Today, Valley Falls State Park retains this local heritage as a display of the land's natural beauty. The main attraction is a series of four striking waterfalls in the Tygart Valley River. With 18 miles of trails throughout the park, there are plenty of opportunities for scenic views, or you can enjoy a relaxing day of fishing on the river. Leashed pets are welcome.
