Thanks to smartphones, you don't need to own an expensive camera to take quality photos. Morgantown homes for sale are surrounded by scenic areas to document in pictures. Head out to these beautiful spots on Monday, June 15 and catch some great shots for National Nature Photography Day.
- Cheat Lake Park - Bunker Hill Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508
At 13 miles long, Cheat Lake Park offers a wide range of photo opportunities. No wakes are permitted in this portion of the lake, which allows for some stunning panorama shots. Your best bet is the 4.5-mile trail that traces the Lake Lynn shoreline. The 12-foot-wide paved walkway is handicap-accessible and affords plenty of space. Be sure to make a stop at the nature viewing on the southern tip of the trail.
- Caperton Trail - 185 Garrett St., Morgantown, WV 26501
"Urban" and "nature" are not mutually exclusive. The Caperton Trail runs parallel to the Monongahela River and passes through the heart of Morgantown, ending in Star City. Six miles of paved trail take you through Edith Barill Park, Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park, and other photo-ready spots. The brick and metal archway marking the start of the trail is a favorite subject for photos.
- West Virginia Botanic Garden - 1601 Tyrone Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508
The vibrant colors of flowers and foliage at West Virginia Botanic Garden are truly striking in photos. Seven trails, each under a mile, take you into the picturesque forest of Tibbs Run Preserve. The Reservoir Loop Trail connects nine distinct gardens onsite, including popular Butterfly and Rhododendron gardens. Add some variety with photos of the sculptures in Hammock Haven. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. WVBG is open daily from dawn until dusk.
- Dorsey's Knob Park - 1107 Dorsey Knob Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508
Dorsey's Knob Park encompasses 70 acres, but the star of the show is Sky Rock. Towering 600 feet, Sky Rock is a beloved Morgantown landmark and well-known picture spot. The breathtaking height gives a photogenic perspective to the valleys and greenery below. Visit Sky Rock later in the day and catch some colorful shots of a classic Morgantown sunset.
- WVU Core Arboretum - West Virginia University, Monongahela Blvd. Morgantown, WV 26505
Founded in 1948, WVU Core Arboretum is a living research and teaching facility for the university, but all Morgantown residents reap the benefits. The arboretum includes several different natural habitats where visitors can see hundreds of native West Virginia trees and herbaceous plants. Many birds and animals make their home on the grounds, providing additional opportunities for candid nature photos. Arboretum admission is free for all guests. Hours are dawn to dusk, seven days a week.
- Coopers Rock State Forest - 61 County Line Dr., Bruceton Mills, WV 26525
Legend has it that Coopers Rock State Forest served as the hideout for a fugitive looking to avoid the law. He made barrels by trade, which is how the site got its name. The outlaw's one-time home is now the park's renowned overlook, which sits high above the mile-wide gorge. Coopers Rock also features a series of cliffs and boulders that offer dramatic angles for photographs. Park hours are 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily and admission is free.
