After all, it's spring anyway and a good time for some deep-cleaning jobs we may have put off all year long.
If you're thinking of putting your home on the market, these tips will help your house stand out among other Morgantown homes for sale.
Deep-Cleaning Tips for Your Home
- Clean the baseboards.
Clean baseboards before you clean floors. There are any number of methods for doing this from using a dry mini broom or stiff paintbrush to wipe off dust, or wiping boards with a cloth dabbed in water and vinegar, or wood cleaner.
- Clean under furniture.
Not easy but needs to be done every year or so. If you don't have anyone to help you move furniture, try putting heavy pieces on gliders so you can move them yourself. Whether it's hard floors or carpet, you need to be able to slide furniture aside so you can vacuum carpets and sweep and mop floors.
- Shampoo rugs and carpets.
While you're moving furniture around, it's also a good time to deep clean rugs and carpeting. Rug shampooing can be a bit of a chore, but you'll enjoy seeing your rugs and carpets look clean and fluffy again.
- Scrub the bathrooms.
Maybe you keep your bathroom pretty clean throughout the week, but there are always some extra chores you can do for spring cleaning. Clean thoroughly around the foot of the toilet, and behind it. Then, spray grout with half vinegar/half water; let it set, then scrub. Mix some baking soda and water, apply it with a brush and spray on the vinegar and water. Brush the grout, then leave the paste so the foam does its work, then wash away. You can use vinegar and water throughout the bathroom for cleaning.
- Vacuum upholstered furniture.
Crumbs, dust, pet hair, kids' toys, and other debris work their way between and under sofa and chair cushions. Periodically, we need to pull the cushions out and vacuum.
- Clean out closets, cabinets, and drawers.
We give sellers a comprehensive "homework" sheet listing everything they should prep prior to our professional, and extensive, listing photo shoots. Even though it is a lot of work, cleaning out a closet is something that's going to need to be done anyway when moving. Clean drawers and shelves so they are free of dust, debris, and spills. Line them with new paper. Tackle closets with "donate" and "toss" piles to make things easier. You're not only getting your home ready for photos and buyer visits, but you're also prepping to move. Two birds, one stone!
- Thoroughly clean the refrigerator.
Perhaps you stay on top of expired food items, tossing them out with the wilted lettuce and shriveled fruit in a timely fashion. If so, kudos. But if you tend to just keep shoving old food further and further back, your fridge needs a yearly cleaning. Turn off the fridge and empty it completely. Toss anything suspect. Clean the walls with vinegar and water or mild soap. Soak and scrub shelves and bins.
- Clean windows.
We've saved the worst for last. Note, you may have to take off screens. Inside the home: Wipe sills with wood cleaner. Inside windows, vacuum or clean with a cloth and pan of water.
To clean glass: Using a terry cloth, wipe down the window frame with water and dish soap. Wash glass with a window scrubber, then use a squeegee to wipe away water and microfiber cloth to dry.
